While returning to the loading area, the pilot flew the helicopter through what he believed to be a gap in the adjacent power lines, where the wires were routed underground. He stated that he was preoccupied with a problem that could have waited until aft er landing, and did not notice that had missed the gap. The helicopter struck the span next to the gap, breaking off the main rotor pitch links, resulting in a heavy ground impact.
