ATA Chapter: 27

Subject:

CAA have received a report from a maintenance provider of finding a cracked tail rotor control pedal assembly at the RH seat location on a Cabri G2. For further information refer to Figures 1 and 2 in the CAN.

Applicability:

All Guimbal Cabri G2 Helicopters.

Purpose:

CAA have received a report from a maintenance provider of finding a cracked tail rotor control pedal assembly at the RH seat location on a Cabri G2. Refer to Figures 1 and 2 in the CAN.

Background:

During a scheduled 500-hour inspection of the aircraft, the engineer found paint cracking on the tail rotor pedal assembly located on the RH side of the helicopter. The paint was removed, and the pedal inspected using a 10x magnifying glass. A distinct line and indications of rust where noted. The pedal was sent for NDT inspection where the indication of a crack was confirmed.

It is not clear if any specific event, or the age of the aircraft are contributing factors to the initiation of the crack.

Recommendation:

This incident highlights the need for diligence when carrying out routine inspections, and of the importance of further investigation when an indication of a defect (especially a crack) is identified.
