Retrieving your removed items

This is guidance for retrieving your item removed from checked-in luggage.

Request return of your item as quickly as possible as this will improve the chance of return to you.
There is no certainty that your item will be able to be returned to you, and your airline is not obligated to do so.

Items removed from checked luggage by AvSec are transferred to your airline who dispose of items, as per their conditions of carriage.

Why was my item removed?

The item removed is classified as a dangerous good that cannot travel in your checked luggage. The reason these items cannot travel is they contain hazardous material that present a risk to the plane.

Dangerous goods cannot be stored on an airport as some are volatile and when in proximity to other types of dangerous goods their volatility increases. Unfortunately, this can result in dangerous goods being disposed of the day they were removed.

When contacting the AvSec station or your airline, please supply:

The reference number on the ‘Notice of Baggage Inspection’ (on the notice placed in your bag)
Flight details - date, time, airline and flight number
A description of the item removed
Your name and contact details

AvSec stations (use if within 24 hours of flying)

Once we have received your information, we will advise you if your airline has uplifted your item or if possession has been retained by AvSec. If more than a day has passed, please contact your airline instead.
