How to become an aviation examiner (optometrist)

Designated aviation examiners (optometrist) may conduct the required eye examinations for pilots and air traffic controllers.

To become an aviation examination (optometrist) you must:

• be a registered optometrist without conditions; and
• have successfully completed the regulatory aviation ophthalmology training provided by CAA; and
• have access to clinical, administrative and communication facilities adequate for the purpose of carrying out vision examinations to the required standard in accordance with the medical manual; and
• have completed a declaration that you hold the appropriate equipment. 

Note: Aviation examiner (optometrist) designation may be issued for a duration of up to five years.

Once your application has been accepted you will be invited to attend the regulatory aviation ophthalmology training. The training is delivered by CAA in cooperation with the School of Optometry, University of Auckland.
