If you hold an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and want to continue operating, you must apply to renew your certificate before it expires.

Submit your renewal application at least 90 days before the earliest expiry date shown on your certificate or operations specifications. More complex renewals may take longer to assess.

   Email your completed application and supporting documents to certification@caa.govt.nz.

Before you apply

Before you submit your renewal application, make sure you:

  • Review your current certificate, operations specifications, exposition, and supporting documents.
  • Identify any proposed amendments.
  • Confirm your senior persons remain current and meet the applicable requirements.
  • Review your maintenance programme, if applicable.
  • Review your security programme, if applicable.
  • Identify any exemptions you need to continue operating.
  • Update the compliance checklists relevant to your operation.

Step 1: Complete the renewal application

Application fees

No payment is required when you submit your application. We will invoice you during the assessment and at the completion of the assessment for CAA time spent at the standard hourly rate.

Step 2: Provide your supporting documents

Exposition

Provide your current exposition and highlight or track any proposed amendments.

Your exposition explains how your organisation operates and complies with aviation rules. It may be one document or several manuals covering operational procedures, responsibilities, training arrangements, safety management systems, and other required information.

If you operate as a company, incorporated society, or limited partnership and your legal name has changed, provide:

  • Companies Office certificate of incorporation

All senior persons must continue to meet the qualifications and experience requirements in:

  • Part 119 Appendix A (Airline Air Operators), or
  • Part 119 Appendix B (General Aviation Air Operators)

Use the FPP questionnaire if Use the FPP declaration if

The person is new, their last questionnaire is more than 5 years old, or their information has changed.

Provide:

  • CV
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of address for service
  • Ministry of Justice criminal conviction check
  • Waka Kotahi traffic safety offence history report

Their last FPP questionnaire was completed less than 5 years ago and their information has not changed.

 Provide:

  • Updated CV if functions or duties are changing

Important - existing exemptions

If you currently rely on an exemption and still need it, you must apply for it again as part of your renewal application, even if no expiry date is shown on your current certificate.

If you require a new exemption, it may need to be approved before your certificate can be renewed.

Step 3: Prepare for assessment and site inspection

Once we receive your application, we will assess whether your organisation continues to comply with the applicable aviation rules.

Make sure:

  • Your documents are available and up to date.
  • Proposed amendments are clearly identified.
  • Senior persons are available to be interviewed.
  • Senior persons understand their responsibilities and your organisation's exposition. 

What happens next

  • We review your renewal application and supporting documents.
  • We assess any proposed amendments.
  • We contact you if we need additional information.
  • We interview senior persons where required.
  • We carry out a site inspection where required.
  • If all requirements are met, we renew your Air Operator Certificate.
